Throughout history, numerous traditions have described the inner journey that leads to personal and spiritual growth. One of the most popular contemporary models to illustrate this process is Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s JourneyWhile it depicts the hero’s (or heroine’s) quest for a treasure or vital truth, it also serves as a practical guide for understanding moments of crisis and opportunities for change in anyone’s life.

In transpersonal psychology, the Hero’s Journey is enriched by perspectives developed in ancient Mexico, associated with the image of the serpent or QuetzalkowatlThis approach views every critical event as a turning point that creates space for new possibilities. Rather than seeing crises as tragic endings, they are considered thresholds where one’s sense of self is tested, and broader awareness can emerge.

Within this framework, the bite of the serpent becomes the metaphor describing the path of “descending into the depths” and “ascending renewed.” Its sinuous image mirrors the serpent’s movements as it rises and falls across different levels. In therapeutic contexts, it proves invaluable for identifying the key episodes in a person’s life, helping them integrate their experiences and discover deeper meaning in their personal narrative.

Two concepts stand out in this map of transformation:

  • The Spiral of Growth: Instead of endlessly repeating the same patterns, individuals progress in a spiral that gradually expands understanding. After each crisis, one does not return to the same point, but rather ascends to a new level of self-awareness and maturity.
  • Action vs. Repetition: Channeling emotions through rituals, art, or other symbolic practices helps avoid re-living problems in a sterile way. By shaping challenges into a meaningful narrative, conscious and creative action is encouraged, propelling the evolution of consciousness.

Thus, the Hero’s Journey, combined with the ancient Mexican idea of Quetzalkowatland the bite of the serpent, offers more than just a literary myth. It provides a pathway for recognizing the cycles in our own lives and transforming moments of fracture into steppingstones for personal and collective renewal.
